Todd's heart is in the right place most of the time, but his need to succeed academically puts him at odds with anything regarding social endeavors due to sheer inexperience. His nose has always been in a book, in studies, or towards a screen almost at all times growing up, and that hasn't stopped ever since he transferred to Duel Academy.
HISTORY
The world of Duel Monsters is truly a unifying force that continues to bring people together across the globe. Todd's father, of Central Asian descent, is one such example. He was hooked the day it came out, and went on to become a professional duelist. Nowhere near the accolades of the King of Games, of course, but he had a small cult following back in his heyday. He traveled across the world to play opponents of all kinds, eventually landing in Domino city as his permanent residence. It was there that he found love, and lost it, forcing him to raise a single child by himself.
His child, too, loved Duel Monsters, but not quite in the same way, and it certainly didn't start out like that! Todd, growing up, couldn't be any less interested in game, focusing solely on his studies so he could get to somewhere in the world rather than focusing on a "children's card game." Intent on going into STEM and furthering humanity itself, Todd was and still is a staunch humanitarian (He doesn't seem to have the social skills to match due to his supreme focus on studying).
It wasn't until his Father was hospitalized for months to illness did he really see the value in Duel Monsters. His father always seemed full of life, looking forward to the next day, and the next challenge. In that bed, he could do nothing, day after day, week after week. In an effort to keep his father's spirits up, Todd began to play duel monsters with him in the hospital. To the Mathematically minded Todd, he saw it as nothing but a game that everyone loved for no reason, but he saw his father's mood improve every single game they played. So he kept playing. Eventually he started having fun with it. Eventually after that, he craved more.
After all that time just writing it off as nothing but child's play, the sudden obsession came pouring out just like his father did when he first started playing. But not the game itself, no--he was more interested in the way people played the game, the cards themselves, and so on. If a simple game like this brought people from around the world together, and got him to connect to his father more than ever before, there had to be something there, right?
Thankfully, his father recovers, and Todd is still looking to further his career in STEM. He gets the bright idea to apply what he's learned to Duel Monsters, and design cards along with helping to make the game itself. On paper, it's a no brainer--The world of Duel Monsters is a multi billion dollar industry, and people from all walks of life can not only play it, but work into it as well. Someone has to design and code duel disks, upkeep servers, and draw artwork for all those cards, he might as well be one of those people.
And maybe through his efforts, he can bring together more people, and make the human race that much better. It brought him and his father together, and it was the reason he was born in the first place. Now if only he could just grow another foot or something so people could stop making fun of his height. Maybe his chosen Alien deck could get some support sometime this century too, maybe.
